Latin America Movie Attendance Soars

Hollywood Reporter released numbers today that shows a pleasant 5-year forecast for Latin American exhibition.

Covering the key markets of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, the report says boxoffice hit $1 billion for the first time in 2004, rising to $1.17 billion by 2006…

The research forecasts admissions across the region will salsa their way to 463 million by 2011, compared with the 357 million recorded during 2006…

Dodona says the largest market in the region is Mexico, whose 105 million people each visited the cinema 1.57 times on average in 2006. But the fastest growing, by contrast, is Peru, where admissions grew from 8.5 million in 2001 to 15.2 million in 2006…

Altogether there are over 8,100 screens in the magnificent seven countries, compared to 6,300 five years ago…

Although the region is growing fast, ticket prices remain relatively low, ranging from an average of $4 in Chile to just $2.21 in Peru. In the largest markets, Mexico and Brazil, cinemagoers pay $3.33 and $3.53 respectively, Dodona said…

The coming of age drama Chop Shop starring two of the biggest breakout stars this year; Alejandro Polanco and Isamar Gonzales will begin its theatrical run at New York’s Film Forum on February 27th. The film tells the story of a 12 year-old Latino street orphan (Polanco) living and working in an auto repair shop on the outskirts of Queens. His life is brightened with the arrival of his sister (Gonzales) who moves in with him, and the two attempt to form a better life together. Koch Lorber Films acquired all domestic rights to the film from Iranian-American writer/director Ramin Bahrani, a recent nominee for an Independent Spirit Award “One to Watch” Award.
